Faculty and Staff

Approximately 25% of college students report academic problems as a result of their drinking, including missing class, falling behind, performing poorly on exams and papers, and receiving lower grades overall.

The University’s Campus Alcohol Coalition continues to set forth initiatives to address the negative consequences of alcohol use, however, comprehensive strategies that address both individual and environmental factors are necessary to move forth in addressing the issue. Below are several ways to incorporate prevention and alcohol education into your class:

• Please don't cancel that class! Call the University Health Center's Health Promotion Department to schedule a guest speaker!! We would love to come in and talk with students about current alcohol and drug use/trends. Schedule a workshop online by visiting www.health.umd.edu.

 • Use current alcohol related topics in the media as a basis for classroom discussions, debates, or personal reflection assignments.

 • Create assignments or research projects related to alcohol that require students to research alcohol-related topics and issues.

 • Take a moment to mention alcohol use and negative consequences before a big game or athletic event as a reminder to students that University faculty and staff are concerned about their health and well-being.

 • Advisors can use individual sessions to address the impact alcohol can have on academic performance, career goals, and academic plans.

 • Be prepared to make referrals. Students may not seek help directly, but there may be some ques that suggest a student is in need of assistance or counseling. The University Health Center offers free substance abuse counseling and assessments for students in need of help. Campus resources include:
