• Please don't cancel that class! Call the University Health Center's Health Promotion Department to schedule a guest speaker!! We would love to come in and talk with students about current alcohol and drug use/trends. Schedule a workshop online by visiting www.health.umd.edu.
• Use current alcohol related topics in the media as a basis for classroom discussions, debates, or personal reflection assignments.
• Create assignments or research projects related to alcohol that require students to research alcohol-related topics and issues.
• Take a moment to mention alcohol use and negative consequences before a big game or athletic event as a reminder to students that University faculty and staff are concerned about their health and well-being.
• Advisors can use individual sessions to address the impact alcohol can have on academic performance, career goals, and academic plans.
• Be prepared to make referrals. Students may not seek help directly, but there may be some ques that suggest a student is in need of assistance or counseling. The University Health Center offers free substance abuse counseling and assessments for students in need of help. Campus resources include:
